So I know how daunting "video" must be to someone who has little desire to even learn it in the first place. Not everyone wants to be a YouTube star, after all.

And yet, being aware that visitors to your site are beginning to expect to see video there, you know it's just a matter of time before you'll have to do something.

Perhaps the idea of buying a video camera, microphone, tripod, lights, light stands, green screen, animated backgrounds, editing programs, and more... has you hesitating.

I know the feeling. You see, I began making documentary films and shot with, of all things... film. Real film. Not 35mm, mind you. It was 16mm. Transferring the footage to video was the only way to see what we recorded and to jumpstart the editing process. And finishing the film meant days in a $200+ per hour post production facility.

As technology advanced, first Hi-8 and then Digital Video became my formats of choice. That made things a little easier and less costly. In fact, one of my films that was shown across the United States on public television for three years was actually a collage of different formats.

Yet after all I had gone through during my most active time as a filmmaker, when I saw the signs of video becoming prevalent online in 2005, I froze. I didn't do anything about it. I pretended it didn't affect me. (Secretly, I hoped I would have more time.)

I thought it was way too complicated. I admit it.

There just seemed like there was so much new stuff to learn, and far too many choices, along with no established standards... which meant possibly going down a path that might end up the way of the 8-Track cassette.

So I panicked... and did nothing.

Yet after seeing what other marketers were doing with videos--some of it very painful to watch, and others downright "cheesy"--I became less resistant to the learning process.

Slowly, I began acquiring the knowledge needed to use video online. I also continued to add to my extensive library of stock footage, special effects, royalty-free music and sound effects. 

And then early last year a fellow marketer gave me encouragement as well as an opportunity to start shooting video again. After years of barely picking up a camera at all, it felt like I had finally returned home.

What I enjoy doing even more than operating the camera, though, is editing. For me, it's a thrill to take random footage and put it together in a way that tells a story... that stirs emotions in those who view it... that moves people to action. That's what I like.
